Parents and Procrastination

Are you a parent? Do you procrastinate? Then you are in the right place and I am here to help. First, we'll identify the reasons that cause you to procrastinate. Next, we'll discuss strategies to overcome procrastination. Lastly, we'll discuss ways for parents to take care of themselves so that they procrastinate less or not at all!! If this sounds good to you then read on!!

Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute or past their deadline. It is a common behavior that can affect people of all ages, including parents. As parents, we have so many obligations to our children, family, work, and ourselves. If you are the parent of a special needs child then you have even more obligations. Some reasons that you might procrastinate could be that you become overwhelmed by the number of tasks that need to be completed in a day. You may even feel unmotivated or become distracted by other activities. By understanding the root cause, you can begin to develop strategies to overcome it.

One strategy for overcoming procrastination is to break tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces. This can help reduce feelings of overwhelm and make it easier to get started on your tasks. For example, instead of trying to clean the whole house in one day, break it down into smaller tasks, like cleaning one room at a time. For parents of special needs children, if you are trying to organize your child's space then pick one section of the room to work on at a time.

Another strategy is to set specific goals and deadlines for completed tasks. By setting clear expectations for yourself, you as the parent can stay focused and motivated to complete your tasks on time. You may also find it helpful to use calendars, to-do-lists, and set reminders on your phone to help you stay on track. One strategy I have used is to do the task I want to do the least, FIRST. This helps to get that task out of the way and motivates me to do the rest of the tasks on my list for that day.

Lastly, it is important for parents to take care of themselves by getting enough rest, exercising, and eating healthy, nourishing foods. Parents can also maintain a gratitude journal, acknowledge their wins and have a meditation practice. Yes, I'm talking about self-care and self-love once again. When you are feeling physically and mentally well, you will find it easier to stay focused and you will become more productive. I personally have tried all of these tips and it has helped me tremendously.

Procrastination is a common challenge that many parents face. Yet, with the right support and strategies you can overcome procrastination and achieve your goals. As your Parent Life Coach, I can help you to learn the strategies, provide the support you need and help you to stay accountable so that you WILL reach your goals.

I am passionate about helping parents overcome their challenges, gain control, and create a balanced life. Some areas of my focus are building stronger relationships, learning self-care and self-love, and improving work/family life balance.
